Street Fighter II · Combo Video · 2021
Street Fighter II's 7 frames-per-second character animation creates a unique technical challenge that fundamentally alters how the game feels to play. With sprite updates capped at this low refresh rate, visual feedback becomes unreliable—inputs complete for a combo just as the first hit connects, leaving players blind to timing cues. This constraint makes execution brutally difficult and explains why combo videos are virtually nonexistent for this 26-year-old title. The game's link-based combo system (no attack cancels allowed) compounds this problem. Every hit must chain naturally into the next with precise timing, yet the sparse animation makes reading your opponent's state nearly impossible. Desk's research uncovered something remarkable: many of the combos demonstrated here may have never been executed before, despite the game's age. Using DIY 2-player autoblock to capture footage, this video proves the game does support true combos—a discovery that challenges the long-held assumption that Street Fighter II simply lacks viable combo potential. What emerges is a portrait of a fighting game defined by its mechanical constraints, where understanding the underlying input system becomes more valuable than visual confirmation.
It's possible that, under the hood, the game updates quicker but after running lots of the footage in slow motion, the character sprites never update at more than 7 frames per second. This makes things incredibly difficult. Combined with the input latency, sometimes you literally finish the inputs for a combo just as the first attack is connecting. So there is no visual feedback to help your timing. I watched a bunch of footage of this game while researching this video and was 100% convinced that the game didn't actually have combos. There were also no combo videos to be found anywhere. Even
