The History of Marvel vs Capcom's 'Special Partners'.

Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter · Match Video · 2019

Tracing the unconventional roster choices that defined Marvel vs. Capcom's assist system, this deep dive explores how Capcom populated its fighting game universes with unexpected characters drawn from across its arcade library. The video documents the journey of obscure picks—characters who appeared in forgotten shooters, dating sims, and niche franchises—and how they earned a place alongside household names in competitive fighting games. Rather than settling for surface-level analysis, the creator invested weeks researching each title and learning games previously unfamiliar to them, then demonstrating practical combos to ground the historical narrative in actual gameplay. The result captures both the creative ambition behind character selection and the technical execution required to play across multiple eras of Capcom fighting games. Viewers consistently note the painstaking effort evident throughout—from the breadth of game coverage to the inclusion of playable combos for every featured character, a choice that sets this retrospective apart from purely archival approaches.

This video took 7 weeks to make. On top of the ridiculous amount of research and fact checking, I had to learn to play X-Men: COTA, Marvel Super Heroes, MSH vs SF and (for just 1 combo) Tatsunoko vs Capcom. Basically, I wanted it to be clearly authored by someone who both loves and can (to some degree) play, fighting games. Also, it's important to mention that all the information in this video refers specifically to Capco
