This means that , in order to do medium attacks, you have to hit 2 buttons at the same time or choose the mode in which you have to hold weak attacks to get stronger attacks. Both are less than ideal and make the game quite annoying to play. Now, If you're not a system mechanic/combo nerd, turn back, before it's too late.
